The fallow deer (Dama dama) is a ruminant mammal belonging to the family Cervidae. This common species is native to Europe, but has been introduced further afield. The fallow deer is a Eurasian deer[9] that was a native to most of Europe during the last interglacial.
Since fallow deer are polygynous species that congregate once every year, males must fight to obtain access to estrous females. The relationship between antler size and body condition can be treated as indicators to reflect body condition within a given year.
Fallow deer antlers are of limited supply and are sourced from natural separation from the animal or as a by-product of slaughter. Each year a fallow deer will shed it’s antler and regrow them. This is an entirely natural process. Occasionally stags are killed and their antlers are removed.
Fallow deer antlers have been used as decoration, manufacturing and taxidermy for hundreds of years. More recently they have been cut up into dog chews due to their high nutritious value as well as being eco-friendly and natural.
